I was born and raised in Toronto. I went to Dewson Street and Kent Public Schools before my family moved to Downsview. I went to Wilson Heights Junior High School and then on to William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate where I was on the Football, Track and Field and Basketball teams. I broke the record for the 100-yard dash for 15 year olds in North York which was finally broken 12 years later.
After graduating from Mackenzie Collegiate I went to the University of Toronto where I entered the General Science course. After first year General Science, I was accepted into the Dentistry programme and graduated four years later from The University of Toronto with my Doctor of Dental Surgery. I was also the head of the Social Committee at the University of Toronto.
After 20 long years of schooling, I graduated as a dentist. It was a long time coming but worth every second. My childhood dream finally came true!
I started my career by purchasing a practice in Nobleton, ON and worked there for a few years. In 1982 I moved to Ajax where I started my new practice in 1984. I have been at my practice in Ajax for 33 years and counting and I still love every minute of it!
It’s great changing smiles and lives through Dentistry. Orthodontics changes a shy child’s life and Cosmetic Dentistry does the same for adults. It is a great feeling to see the instantaneous changes made in my patients’ confidence and personality.
I was on Staff at York Central Hospital in Richmond Hill for 8 years as well as the Ajax/Pickering Hospital for an additional 9 years. The hospital setting gives me an opportunity to work with medically compromised patients.
I have always tried my best to take part in different aspects of dentistry outside of my practice and help out wherever I can. For example, I volunteered at the Toronto Free Dental Clinic for 5 years helping those in need and giving back to the community. I was also a volunteer in the last Special Olympics providing free dental care and custom mouth guards for the athletes.
Since first year Dental School I have been an active member of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity. Alpha Omega is a valuable resource for me today since I regularly take part in lectures on a variety of dental topics, continuing education seminars and study groups.
I also belong to the Canadian Dental Association, The Ontario Dental Association and The Academy of General Dentistry. These groups hold continuing education seminars that I regularly attend. I am dedicating to life-long learning and strive to be the best dentist that I can be.
Winning The Reader’s Choice Award for the Best Dental Office in Ajax and Pickering is an accomplishment that I am especially proud of since it is the community that votes for me. I have won this award 11 of the last 14 years and could not have done it without my patients and wonderful staff Linda, Gail and Sarah.
I am most proud of my son Nathan who is in his last year of dentistry at the University of Western Ontario. Nathan graduates in a few months and will join me at 3 Harwood Avenue South in Ajax to make The Miskin Family Dental Practice. We can hardly wait to learn from each other and practice together!
