After extraction you will need to bite down on gauze for at least 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, you may replace the gauze (a moistened tea bag also works) and apply pressure for another 30 mins. Some oozing a few hours after surgery is normal.
DO NOT RINSE for the rest of the day. Begin rinsing the following day with mouthwash or warm water after eating and before bed time. Continue this for several days.
Swelling and/or bruising after surgery may occur and last for 3 to 7 days. Ice packs may be applied as soon as you get home and for the rest of the day. It is best to hold the ice pack on the facial area for 20 minutes at a time for several hours.
You should brush your teeth the same day as surgery but avoid the extraction area. Be gentle around surgical sites for several days. If stitches were used they will either dissolve within 2 weeks for they will need to be removed in 7-14 days. If in doubt please contact our office.
Take post-op tablets as directed. We advise beginning pain pills about one hour after surgery before freezing wears off. Do not eat or drink anything too hot/cold for 24 hours. Drink plenty of fluids such as ginger ale, coke or fruit juice but refrain from drinking with a straw because if causes bleeding. Eat soft foods such as yogurt, pasta or eggs and resume normal diet when comfortable.
