Dentures are an affordable and effective way of replacing missing teeth. Composed of resilient plastic, both full and partial dentures can be fabricated to feel and look natural. Modern dentures are custom fit, making it possible to eat foods with confidence and to speak articulately.

More than 60 percent of Canadian adults are missing one or more teeth and 10 percent are missing all of their teeth. Dentures will restore aesthetics and function to their smiles. More than 3 million Canadians currently wear partial or full dentures and that number will rise as people are living longer every year.

Partial dentures rest on the surrounding teeth to fill in the gaps where one or more teeth are missing. Full dentures are made when there are no teeth remaining and rest only on the gums. They are both affordable options to other dental prosthetics and are fully removable by the wearer. Many people find that they regain much of their original function and aesthetics with partial dentures in a very short time where full dentures usually take longer. But over time, you should begin to feel more and more comfortable with your new dentures.

Conventional or Immediate Dentures?

The gums require a period of healing after any diseased teeth have been extracted. Even up to 9 to 12 months it is normal for the gums to shrink due to the loss of teeth. During this time, you may receive immediate dentures which are designed before the removal of your teeth and are immediately inserted after their extraction. Because of the natural shrinkage of the gums, immediate dentures must be relined a few times to fit the new shape of your mouth as the gums shrink.

In the past, with conventional dentures, you are not given dentures right away. Instead, your gums are allowed to heal first. While this does mean going without teeth for a period, when conventional dentures are placed, they usually require only minor future adjustments, if any.

The only advantage of conventional dentures is that they don’t need to be relined. Immediate dentures are a lot different as you get them right away, no waiting, but you need several relines.
