Periodontal disease, or gum disease, are dangerous bacterial infections of the tissues supporting and surrounding the teeth. This comprises gums, bone and the fibers, known as periodontal ligaments, that hold and support the teeth in the jaw.

These bacterial infections can destroy your gums as well as the supporting bone that holds your teeth in your mouth.

The consequence of untreated periodontal disease is teeth that loosen and need to be extracted and replaced with dental bridges or dentures. Also, you may require gum surgery to protect and cover exposed root surfaces, correct gum and jawbone hollows or reshape and repair the gum tissue.

According to the American Academy of Periodontology periodontal disease has been related to health problems that spread far beyond your mouth including heart disease and diabetes.

It was thought that bacteria were the factor that linked gum disease to other body diseases but more recently research reveals that inflammation may be the culprit. So, treatment of inflammation may not only help manage gum disease but may also help with other chronic inflammatory conditions.

Therefore, periodontal disease can be completely preventable and repairable through good dental habits

90% of Canadians have gum disease and not even know it. They often may have no pain or symptoms until serious bone loss has taken place.

It is critical to call Miskin Dental if you are experiencing any of these symptoms.

  • • Red, swollen or tender gums
    • Gums that bleed easily when brushing or flossing
    • Gums that pull away from the teeth
    • Loose or separating teeth
    • Pus between the gums and the teeth
    • Persistent bad breath
    • Change in your bite and/or in the fit of removable dentures

The main cause of gum disease is bacterial plaque that sticky, acidy goo that forms on your teeth if they are not cleaned like they should be. Bacterial plaque can infect the gums, release toxins that redden and inflame the tissue, and gradually destroy the tissues supporting the teeth and underlying bone. If this happens, the gums separate from the teeth, forming pockets that fill with more plaque and cause additional infection. Home cleaning is not enough. Professional cleaning is a necessity!
